Spot Yard Dog / Forklift Driver
Position Summary
The Spot Yard Dog / Forklift Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of raw materials, finished goods, and equipment throughout the manufacturing facility and move trailers in the yard. This position plays a critical role in maintaining production flow by ensuring timely delivery of materials to production lines and managing trailer and container positioning within the yard.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate sit-down, stand-up, and/or reach forklifts to move materials, pallets, and products throughout the facility and move trailers in the yard
- Spot, hook, and position trailers and containers within the yard using a yard truck (hostler/spotter)
- Load and unload trailers, railcars, and containers as directed
- Transport raw materials to production lines and move finished goods to designated storage or staging areas
- Conduct pre-shift equipment inspections and report any damage or maintenance needs to the supervisor
- Maintain accurate records of trailer positions, inventory movements, and equipment inspections
- Assist with inventory counts and cycle counts as required
- Follow all facility safety procedures, traffic rules, and OSHA regulations
- Keep the yard and dock areas clean, organized, and free of hazards
- Communicate effectively with shipping/receiving, warehouse, and production teams
- Perform other duties as assigned by management

Required Certifications & Licenses
- Valid forklift operator certification (company-issued) — must be current and maintained
- Valid Class C driver's license (or higher); CDL preferred but not required
- OSHA-compliant forklift safety training certificate
- Yard truck / hostler operation certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire)
- Any required site-specific safety certifications as determined by facility management
- Performs other duties as assigned
Note: All certifications must be kept current. Recertification is required per company policy and regulatory guidelines. The company will provide recertification training as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Minimum 1 year of verifiable forklift operation experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Previous yard truck / hostler experience strongly preferred
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to safely operate various types of forklifts and material handling equipment
- Strong spatial awareness and ability to maneuver equipment in tight spaces
- Basic math skills for inventory and load count documentation
- Ability to read and interpret bills of lading, work orders, and shipping labels
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods while operating equipment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Must be able to work in varying outdoor weather conditions
- Ability to work in environments with noise, dust, and temperature variations
Work Environment
This position works in an active manufacturing facility and outdoor yard environment. Exposure to moving machinery, vehicles, and varying weather conditions is expected. Personal protective equipment (PPE) including steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest, and hard hat is required at all times in designated areas.
